How do heat pumps communicate within a smart grid?

The heat pumps at Schoonschip Amsterdam are of different brands and types, however they are all selected by the Smart Grid Ready label (SG-ready).

This SG Ready-label indicates that the steering mechanism of the heat pump can be integrated in an intelligent electricity network. The addition of a (home) energy management systems is required.
